Originally the Eighth Air Force, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) was founded in 1945 at the end of World War II.

Comprised of approximately 73,000 military and civilian personnel, USAFE is one of only two Air Force Commands located outside of the continental United States. Uniquely positioned to protect America's interests abroad, USAFE has been an integral part of America's global military strategy for more than fifty years, evolving to become one of the nation's most flexible and efficient aviation forces.
