Schofield Barracks is the largest US Army post in Hawaii, located in central Oahu. The post was established in 1908 to provide mobile defense of Pearl Harbor and the entire island. It suffered its first attack on December 7, 1941. Since that time it has been the home of the 25th Infantry Division, known as the “Tropic Lightning” Division, as well as the Command Headquarters for US Army Hawaii. Schofield Barracks is also home to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

Schofield Barracks is named after Lieutenant General John McAllister Schofield who was sent to Hawaii in 1872, and who recommended the establishment of a naval base at Pearl Harbor. Immortalized in the book by James Jones and the movie of the same name, From Here to Eternity, Schofield Barracks was touted as the most beautiful army post in the United States, being referred to by the Honolulu Star Bulletin as a country club. More than a million soldiers called Schofield Barracks home. With its broad, palm-lined boulevards and Art Deco buildings, this old army cavalry post is still the largest operated by the US Army outside the continental United States.

The Schofield Barracks challenge coin reflects the heritage of the post, and salutes the exceptional bravery and famous service record of the “Tropic Lightning” Division from the first day of the war with Japan until the present. The obverse displays the “Tropic Lightning” insignia in bright red enamel, the obverse a bold representation of the seal of the United States, finished in gold, black and green enamels. This handsome Schofield Barracks coin is minted in bold relief with a special nickel alloy.
