Pleiku 1965 Challenge Coin - Bronze Antique
In November of 1965, the U.S. Army's Seventh Air Cavalry Division achieved victory against all odds in the first official battle of the Vietnam War.
Battling a shadowy enemy on unforgiving terrain, the soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry refused to yield, ultimately completing their mission to secure the infamous Ia Drang Valley. Surrounded and severely outnumbered, they drew from an endless reserve of courage and resolve, holding their precarious position for three days in the face of unceasing attacks.
This coin is dedicated to all the heroes of the Battle of Ia Drang Valley and honors the memory of those who gave their lives in the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The obverse features four soldiers positioned in a circle beneath the words "We Were Solders." The design of the reverse replicates that of the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and contains the names of soldiers who lost their lives at the Battle of Ia Drang. One soldier from each unit is represented. The reverse also contains a space for engraving.
Minted in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold, this detailed medallion is coated in an antique bronze finish. Each coin comes with a header card that describes the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in rich detail.
