Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Challenge Coin
Located in the extreme Northwest of the continental United States on picuresque Whidbey Island, 80 miles North of Seattle, Washington, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station occupies a strategic position in this country's defense.
Originally built during World War 2 to help defend the Northwest against possible Japanese attack, Whidbey Island has not only played a pivotal role in this nation's defense, but has served as a training command for thousands of sailors and airmen. Today, the Air Station is home to 19 active duty squadrons, 2 reserve squadrons and numerous tenant commands.
This medallion is dedicated to the former and current Naval and Civilian personnel who have proudly served this great Naval Station in its important role in this nation's freedom.
The obverse features a Naval plane flying over the Deception Pass Bridge on Whidbey Island. The reverse depicts jets climbing over Puget Sound and the majectic Cascade Mountains. The coin is minted in a brass alloy and given a warm antique bronze finish. It comes packaged in a poly bag with a header card.
