Show your allegiance to McConnell Air Force Base (AFB) Kansas with this impressive challenge coin dedicated to all the military and civilian personnel operating together in Wichita.

McConnell AFB began as Wichita Municipal Airport. Then in 1941, just before the U.S. entered WWII, the Kansas National Guard received assignment to the base. From there the U.S. Air Force took title to the airport, and officially in 1951 it was christened McConnell Air Force Base – named after three brothers from Wichita, all Air Force pilots and WWII vets.

At the base, the 22nd Air Refueling Wing (ARW) plays to host to two additional tenant units – the Air National Guard’s 184th Intelligence Wing and the Air Force Reserve 931st Air Refueling Group. McConnell AFB boasts as the only U.S. Air Force base to accommodate active-duty military, Guard, and Reserve units.

The 22nd ARW not only supports pilots during critical missions, it also provides airlift and medical evacuation services across the globe -- under any circumstances, in any weather. Perfected and refined since the first successful in-flight refueling in 1923, the mighty KC-135 Stratotanker now provides indispensably precise air refueling to pilots of the armed forces.

Minted in antique nickel and highlighted by bold blue enamel, this challenge coin honors the members of McConnell Air Force Base. The obverse features the 22nd ARW’s emblem with its motto in Latin — “DUCEMUS”, and in English — “WE SHALL LEAD.” The reverse displays one of its mighty KC-135s with a tanker crew’s rallying cry acronym “NKAWTG” – nobody kicks ass without tanker gas.
