“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
“And Joseph also went up from Galilee… unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem… with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger….” (Luke 2:4-7)
The story of the birth of Jesus has been held as sacred by all Christendom for more than two millennia. No coin can capture the totality of this occurrence as it is experienced in each life, but the striking of this beautiful coin is an attempt to appropriately commemorate this event. The obverse pictures the traditional manger scene with Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. Also included are the three Magi, wise men from the East following a mysterious star commonly known as the Star of Bethlehem, to bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the baby. Commemoration of this visit, the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, is the formal end of the Christmas season for many churches. Much of Western Christianity celebrates four weeks of Advent in anticipation of the birth of Jesus, while the Eastern Orthodox Church practices the 40-day Nativity Fast.
This beautiful Christmas coin is “splash minted” using special dies that provide deep relief and exquisite detail. It is minted in bronze and brushed with an antique finish. The reverse has a large area perfect for engraving a special Christmas message, and is decorated with a twig of Christmas holly and a happy “Merry Christmas.”
