The courageous Sailors of the U.S. Navy know first hand the inherent dangers of life at sea. Braving deep waters far from their homes, they carry out the Navy's mission to protect America's freedom throughout the world.

For centuries, U.S. Navy Sailors have invoked the name of St. Elmo, Patron Saint of Mariners, seeking aid and protection from above as they perform their duty.

St. Elmo's Fire is the name given to a meteorological phenomenon in which an electrical discharge, produced from a lightning strike, visibly emenates from a tall grounded object, such as the mast of a ship. According to maritime legend, one flame portends bad weather on the horizon while two flames signals fair skies ahead.

This coin is dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. Navy, who fearlessly navigate uncharted waters to protect and defend America's interests.

The obverse depicts the figure of St. Elmo standing guard over a vintage Navy frigate. The reverse bears the seal of the U.S. Navy.

This proof-like coin is minted in MerlinGold,® a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold. It comes sealed in a tarnish-resistant Lucite capsule and is accompanied by a header card that chronicles the Navy's history.
