U.S. Air Force Navigator/Observer Coin
Originally established during the development of the Army Air Corps in World War I, the Navigator/Observer specialty has a long and proud heritage in the U.S. Air Force.
Charged initially with the task of identifying enemy aircraft by sight and communicating their position to the pilot, this role took on a whole new sophistication with the advent and widespread use of radar and other advanced reconnaissance technology. Today, as flight engineers and communications specialists, Navigators employ complex electronic devices to track enemy movements and chart flight patterns, providing the aircraft they serve with critical real-time information to aid them in the completion of their assigned mission.
This coin honors those who have earned the designation of U.S. Air Force Navigator/Observer and salutes this celebrated military tradition. The obverse features the unit patch worn by those who serve the Air Force in the Navigator/Observer role. The reverse bears the Air Force's wing and star emblem. Minted in a nickel alloy, this coin is imbued with rich enamel accents on both sides.
